Ouch Andy, I'm not a salesman either; I'm actually retired as a product development guy. Just throwing in my 2 cents worth from experiences in the field for 20 years along with some actual technical experience.

While it's true about running dry pads slower that applies to most of the dry pads are phenolic (heat resistant material) based but the Diamant Boart pads are ceramic (heat proof) based and can take more heat. Just like most other diamond tools, the RPM's need to be adjusted depending on the quality...

The alpha vsp-120 wet grinder is a varible speed machine from 500 to 2800 rpms. Make sure you are running on the 2800 rpm speed. This alone could be your problem. Actually .50 vs .085 may or may not be the determining factor for chipping. The diamond size grit, quality of the diamond and the concentration of diamond as well as the bond all need to be taken into consideration; i.e. when cutting glass the grit of diamond must be very fine, perhaps 150/200 grit ...

Electroplated blades are for soft/non-abrasive stones and Will cut granite but life will be extremely compromised while sintered granite blades will normally chip marble or soft stones because of the make-up of the stone itself.
