Re: Best method of back lighting onyx
I realise this is an old thread but if there is anyone interested in design drawings showing the best layering process for backlit countertops I will be more than happy to share our drawings with the SFA community
Send us an email and I will forward them to you
Cheers

Re: Best method of back lighting onyx
Thanks for the kind words gentlemen!
Not sure if I find some of this ugly or not but a customer passed it on to me, seems they have figured a way of staining translucent stone http://www.crystalinestone.com/

Re: Best method of back lighting onyx
Awesome- there might be some nightclub applications for the multicolored stuff.
Do you think that the process that they use actually makes the Onyx less brittle/crumbly/ porous? Would be great if you could share your findings once you have worked with it.
We do alot of commercial bars and staining is always a concern

Re: Best method of back lighting onyx
I will feed back. I am a little skeptical. I doubt that their staining or coloring has much effect on the slab strength itself. I am curious as to how well it is dyed and what it is exactly. It isn't like onyx as we know it, because that is sellable at the same price or more. It has to be one of these crystalline type marbles coming out of brazil that many classify as quartzite, and it would have to be lots of that or that kind of family that wont sell unless altered for whatever reasons. The only way this is profitable is if the material is worthless when you start, so my guess is it fabricates not like onyx at all. Or it is that Chinese onyx that could be had cheap enough in bulk I suppose.....
Everything is relative
Re: Best method of back lighting onyx
I agree, the pricing I am sure would be blown out if they took onyx then added another man made process. Probably be up there in the Concetto price range
Speaking of which , I wish we had more opportunities to work with Concetto or any semi precious slabs. I have been considering giving away some LED panels if we can just get some concetto images for our portfolio. Such a striking product
cheers

Re: Best method of back lighting onyx
There are these new LED 12" x 12" panels. They give a consistent light projection and can even be cut to size. I will try to get pictures.
I recently used rope lights for a friends' bathroom. I foolishly offered to make him a countertop for his new fixer upper house. He decided to get new cabinets AFTER I built the countertop and 3 backsplashes, and they are 3" deeper.
No problem. We screwed in a strip of wood to the wall and made an onyx night lite for his daughters.

Clever way to make use of the Onyx as a nightlight. Maybe a new app we can start selling is backlit onyx tile baseboards in a bathroom environment.
I will look into it

Re: Best method of back lighting onyx
Backlit baseboards would be cool! After reading this thread, I think I need to add some lighting to my bathroom. I have power in the cabinet so it would be easy to do.
Lighting the baseboards may not provide enough light up near the counter where you need to see, but that is a place where you could sell more stone (and lights).

Re: Best method of back lighting onyx
I have a few excess LED Panels lying around if you would like to do a countertop. I will donate it if I can get some pics of the final install

Hey Cameron
Looks really nice
Good job on the illumination of the front edge. Did you miter it?
Is the blue green streak natural?
Cheers

Re: Best method of back lighting onyx
Here is a project that we absolutely loved doing and I am sure you will agree it turned out great.
This is Metropolitan at the 9 - The Vault
Nu World was originally approached by the stone company on the project, for more information about our custom LED Light Panel products which are used to illuminate stone countertops. We then worked directly with the Millwork companyto ensure the correct LED Panel shape and configuration for the project. This project consisted of a large onyx bar top, a custom shape corner section as well as a waterfall edge which all had to be evenly illuminated. Once the configuration was approved we worked closely with the electrical contractor to iron out last minute details and ensure all dimensions and shapes were 100% correct
So you see we work with all parties involved to ensure a seamless install
Let me know what you think of the images
