Re: Joey Marcella - Artist
I have watched the video five times and it does not get old..... My imagination fills me with all the details in a process of making a sculpture of that caliber! I mean, a regular sculpture, with a head or body is hard to do... But this, in one piece!!!! Insane! There is literally no room for error.
I have spent a bit of time talking with Joey, and as most here know, he is a class act in many ways! Knowing this, I am still blown away by your skills mr Marcella. This sculpture, IMO , is of world class caliber!

Re: Joey Marcella - Artist
that is very inspiring Joey! I have wanted for years to do more creative pieces - I think I will start a bit smaller than that though...
I am guessing that is not the first time you have done stone carving....

Re: Joey Marcella - Artist
Joey, that is Amazing! Those infinity , helix pieces are very difficult, Bravo!
I've sculpted in stone, bronze and multi media, then I started my own shop and stopped
carpal tunnel got too bad, but I have a new carving I'm starting and I'm excited about after all these years, maybe I'll post some pics as I go.
All of you guys should try it! Get a piece of soapstone or alabaster and a basic tool kit and a book an go for it. I'm self taught and had no idea I could do it until I tried, never did anything like it before. Like Cam I was a mechanic for years building HP VW engines till I started in tile and stone.
If anyone is interested I can help steer in basics, it's very stress relieving, and you will be surprised at what you can do, but as Joey mentioned I does take patience, although once your in the "Zone" time really flies by!
It can be done with hammers ,chisels and riffler files as seen in Joey's video, although some use power tools entirely, usually a combination of both.
Thanks again for the inspiration to get me back into it.
Cheers!

Re: Joey Marcella - Artist
Simply amazing piece!! I'm not sure what your all interested in but, here in Marble Colorado there is a sculpting symposium. It's three separate sessions in the summer, July 2-9, July 15-22 and July 29-5, which is the one attend.
The cost is $900.00 that includes up to 500 lbs. of Colorado Yule marble. The sessions are for beginner to advanced. marbleinst.org is the link.

Re: Joey Marcella - Artist
That is amazing. The patience you must have to do that. I have hand carved queen ann legs out of walnut and mahogany wood but I cannot imagine knocking out the scrap with a chisel and hammer on stone without breaking it. Wood is much more forgiving.

Amazing work Joey. I showed this video a few months ago to my office. Inspires me to create some interesting sculptures.
