I have a customer that wants a chiseled edge but would like it smoothed out so it is not sharp. What would be the best way to do this? I was thinking of using antiquing brushes.
Looking back, fifty years from now, don't you want to say you had the guts to get in the car!!

Re: smooth chiseled edge
Most the time we still use silicone carbide 60g wheels turning super slow rpms and wet to get the worst of it softened then worn out 50g pad and 3step pads. If needed or they want the low spots dark too, we use ager or some enhancer once in shop then recoat at job if needed.

Re: smooth chiseled edge
We have found antiquing brushes work great for limestone Or marble. If it's granite we start off with a coarse wire brush (cup wheel) and then go 60,120,240 with the antiquing brushes. Finish off with ager.
Make sure you wear safety glasses with the wire brush!

Re: smooth chiseled edge
Chisel the edge and use worn polishing pads on the high spots.

Re: smooth chiseled edge
We used 60 grit fiber backed sand paper and bristle brush antique wheel. In hind sight, I would use the 36, 60, 120 bristle and be done with a quick pass of each

Re: smooth chiseled edge
We do this all the time for Longhorn Steakhouse. After chiseling we then take a 6" blade and use it to smooth out and shape the edges. Then worn pad on very soft backer. Finish with ager. No sharps, no little areas to catch food. Has to be able to pass a health department inspection for cleaning. That may end up with a smoother finish than you want.

Re: smooth chiseled edge
Same as David , if they want it with polished high spots , just keep running thru the pads. Looks really nice.
We are also doing a lot of the Steel Grey " Precious Finish " we hit the edge heavy with a 36" brush , go up to 220 , then polish the high spots, looks exactly like the face when finished.

Re: smooth chiseled edge
I was told at Briggs' workshop (many moons ago) to use the under side of your wrist to check for smoothness. We still do this.

That was my first workshop too. I missed my plane back to Baton Rouge that Saturday because I forgot I was in the Eastern Time Zone.Joe Little wrote:Briggs: My very first workshop![]()
