Best method of back lighting onyx
Can I ask what members are using as the best method of backlighting onyx as a vanity top.
The application is a bathroom vanity with a 4" ish mitred skirt.
We have built a lexan box as added strength for the onyx to sit on.
A hotel in vegas i was just at said that they used strips of LED's.
Where do I source this? Is it bright enough?
Any other suggestions (polite?) would be mucho appreciated.
thanks
Clark

Re: Best method of back lighting onyx
The big orange or blue box have many kinds of rope light and strip lights that should work. I would think rope light would be easiest to move around for an even layout and appearance.

Thanks Dave, I have actually tried rope lighting but it either wasnt bright enough or when you push it up against the surface you can see the "rope" lines, so i was hoping for somthing better perhaps the sheets of led's that i had heard of but havnt been able to source?

There is a place by me that could probably help you out. It is called Rainbow HiTech. Their number is (313) 794-7355. I haven't used them, but have stopped in there to get a price. They were kind of pricey, but if you are out of options they could help.

Re: Best method of back lighting onyx
CR LAURENCE sell LED light strips for backlighting and under lighting glass. You need strips and a transformer. The other thing you can do (we did it with glass) is go ahead and sandblast your lexan box, that way if you need to move your lighting closer to the surface it will help in difusing the individual bulb look.

Try www.elementalled.com. I've used some lights from them before.

Re: Best method of back lighting onyx
Had good results with rope lighting. Inexpensive and easy to install in hard to reach places. Had no real issues with seeing the rope lines. Only really used it on honey and white onyx though.

Re: Best method of back lighting onyx
Maybe LED light strips from IKEA.
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/20119418
I bought some of these for my bathroom vanity, but ended up using them in my closet. They are brighter than rope lights by far, they last longer, and they use less energy. Mine change color slowly or you can set it on a color. It is not as easy as just flipping a switch though. You have to hold the button down for a few seconds to make it stop on a color and it is kind of confusing to the point of needing instructions for a newbie.
The LED panels you are speaking of are VERY expensive.

Brett, I just checked out that website. That is awesome stuff! Thanks for posting that. Now I am thinking of what I can make!!Tate Ornamental wrote:Try http://www.elementalled.com. I've used some lights from them before.

It is similar to this stuff from SparkFun, but Elementalled has it all...

Here's a link to the fiber optic panels -
I REALLY dig these - as IMHO - they give you lots more options for even light diffusion and supply:

Give Roland Fiertag at excell granite in tampa(google search dont have shop # and too lazy to do it for you...
) a call. He is a friend of mine has a fab shop here in tampa and does a ton of onyx. He has some displays setup with backlight in his showroom(highly recommended). He can also source you onyx pretty cheap, he has a ton of it. I believe he has both the strips and the arrays.

Re: Best method of back lighting onyx
Here's one I did about 14 years ago with some scrap left over from the State Line Casino project in Wendover, Nevada and I used Malibu yard lights to do the backlighting on this one - way before LED's and FiberOptic panels were readily available...
I just put a single Malibu 4 watt low voltage light bulb behind each number - set back from the back of the stone by about 4 inches....I engraved the numbers in the stone with a Dremel & a regular steel ball to give a "hammered" look..... I covered the whole piece (18" x 24") with blue tape, drew on the numbers, cut out the tape where the numbers are, engraved each number, then I spray painted gold on where I had engraved and removed the tape to reveal the finished work...... pretty easy...
House marker by day.....

Beacon by night.....

View from the street at Christmas time.....

I am working on a couple of new designs in the shop - I'll post pics when these new ones are done...
Enjoy!!!

Re: Best method of back lighting onyx
Thank you very much to all that replied. I am experimenting with both flexible led strips and the more rigid aluminum led strips.. more expensive but a little brighter.

We used LED lights in our board room table legs.

Sorry Anna, but with the room lights off, it looks to me like that table needs a brass pole in the center. I'm just sayin'..............

Our Reception desk also has back lighting. We used rope lighing, however it dosen't work as good as the LED lights. But Clients get the idea.
I will see if I can find a pic.
