Re: Sealer testing
I spoke with Steven and should make an ammendment to the above post. I forgot about the fact that STT offers a warranty, and if you want that warranty to be valid if there is a problem, the manufacturers recommendations should be followed.Kris Jorgensen wrote:Thanks for the info Eddie. I do agree that the manufacturers recommendations are not always the best. I have been using VRM for quite some time and I followed the manufactures instructions until recently when Cameron told me to do quicker lighter coats and wait in between. I have found Cameron's method to work far better for us and requires less coats and less sealer. Somehow it seems to seal the surface better instead of driving the sealer deep into the stone. That's what I've learned based on my own experiences, but I could be wrong.

Re: Sealer testing
Just did a test on Giallo Ornamental. 1 coat of tenax protex and tenax prosealer left on for 10 minutes. Wiped off and put another coat on and left for 10 minutes. Left water on both over night. Put a glass accent on top to add some pressure and to keep the water from evaporating. Prosealer is a winner. I have never been able to get Ornamental to seal up so quickly with so few coats. I'm sold.

Re: Sealer testing
OK, just finished a Hydrex test on the same Giallo Ornamental. Hydrex is a winner too - just as Kris has demonstrated. Applied 2 quick coats and this baby is sealed and it costs less than the prosealer!

Re: Sealer testing
I use hydrex for pretty much all my stone. Dan, you mentioned that you like that it doesn't leave a residue - do you wipe off the excess? I find that on darker stones you can see residue if you don't wipe off - you haven't had this happen?

Re: Sealer testing
I just recently received some Hydrex. We buff out everything (due to early indoctrination
) Less residue is better. We apply with a gloved hand (to break the surface tension and allow the sealer to penetrate further, let stand for 15 minutes, buff off any residue, then repeat. We use this procedure on every sealer we have used. Real world.

Re: Sealer testing
I did this test on a venetian sink cutout....I used our SLX sealer - 1 coat on one half, and 2 on the other(let them sit 24 hours). Applied Soda, Wine, olive oil, coffee and none of them stained after sitting for 24 hours.

Re: Sealer testing
Josh, was this a resined piece of stone? All of the New Venetian Gold we've been getting doesn't take much to seal.VThartzog wrote:I did this test on a venetian sink cutout....I used our SLX sealer - 1 coat on one half, and 2 on the other(let them sit 24 hours). You can figure that out yourself.....estone wrote:TO BREAK THE TENSION???

Seriously, all sealers will benefit from some agitation to help work them into the pores of the stone.

Re: Sealer testing
Todd,
Place a droplet of water on a slab of stone and it will most likely just sit there as a bead of water. Push it into the stone with your finger and you will break the tension on that bead and it will disperse onto the surface of the stone.
While using a gloved hand creates great tension in an examining room it works wonders in a stone shop. The glove allows you to spread your sealer over the stone surface without absorbing the product as it would if you used paper towels. Using this method you will find that you will use much less product to achieve your desired result.

Re: Sealer testing
I use a felt pad, it's the paint pad here, the flat one. it covers more area than your fingers, doesnt abosrb too much sealer (less waste) and will do the same thing. They have them at home depot in the painting section

Re: Sealer testing
How did the Dupont Bulletproof sealer stack up against the rest? We just had one of there reps come by today. He talked a good game as most do. His offerings included a Sealer kit with a 15 year co. backed transferable warranty. It comes with a serial number to register with Dupont. Price seemed steep even though it would be passed on to custy.
