Vanity Sink Over Hang

Had an install where the customer had complaints about the 1/4 inch over hang on the vanity under mount sink, said that shes been to all the local home depots in her area and all are flush tho the sink . We have been doing the same 1/4inch over hang for over 10 years. Mainly so there is no reveal on sink and therefore no maintenance on silicon. Can i hear some opinions please.

What make and model sink?

Our policy....we cut to the manufacture's cutout. There is a reason that they spec such a cutout and therefore that is what we use.

I agree sink was a kohler 2209 that is what my reply was to customer, that all we do is cut the under mount hole to the manufacturers template therefore resulting in an acceptable finished look.

I always cut them with an overhang mostly because a lot of these sinks are not finished all the way up to the flange if you cut them flush you run the risk of having unfinished porcelain exposed plus its less maintenance on the sealant if its not exposed to the water all the time

Tell her to call Kohler and ask them how it should be mounted, if that doesn't satisfy her then nothing will. Vanity sinks are not like kitchen sinks, there is no flush or reveal option in porcelain. People are nuts.....

The vitreous china sinks are a fired-clay product. Even though they all come from the same molds, they to have some (very slight) warping and shrinking as they dry and are subsequently fired. I believe that the overhang is to account for those variances.

The bowl shape can vary quite a bit and that is why the manufactures have such a large over hang into the bowl.

Ive tried to cheat that 1/4" back to 1/8" and you will have a mess. White silicon will usually hide it pretty well. The paint doesnt go all the way up on the flange. Show her that and explain it. If she still wants it, do it and leave her with the mess.
