Firstly,
I work for Akropolis Marble and Granite in PA and I wanted to say hello to all the contributors. I'm sure I will be asking you plenty of questions over the next couple years. Question the first is this; Has anyone ever used the supports pictured below to secure a glass breakfast bar to a natural stone countertop? Will this support put too much stress on the granite top. I am running this down for a customer and I do not yet know which stone they may be using so please give me the full run down from stones as strong as Black Absolute to stones as fragile as Ouro Fantastico. Thank you very much.

Supports for Glass Breakfast Bar
Re: Supports for Glass Breakfast Bar
Yes we have.
If the upper is a straight piece like the picture we have the builder install a steel bracket directly under the stone. Then we install the stone using knife grade between the stone and the brackets so the bolts can be tightend without cracking the stone.
If the upper is curved or angled the steel brackets are not needed.

Yes, we have done this, and we have done them in vertical supports. Most of these brackets come supplied with silicone gromets where they impact the stone. If not, you need to make one (between the bracket and the surface of the stone. We have done some were we through bolted them using backing plates, we have also done them with blind holes and filled hole with knife grade and set the mounting bolts in while waiting for it to cure. Both ways worked great.
Check CRLaurence for the brackets. Set up an account to avoid buying them through a third party.

Re: Supports for Glass Breakfast Bar
I tried the bartop bracket style referenced in earlier posts with a heavy granite top and found the brackets would give slightly.
Short Run Pro (http://www.shortrunpro.com) has some great brackets that we found took the stress off of the lower countertop. Of course the brackets mount to the cabinet surface.

We've done them several times with no problems.
