when I was an auto tech, it was hard to get up and be at work ready to go at 8am. since I started working for my dad, Ive been getting up at 5 and at work at 6 opening shop. the guys are in the shop with tools in hand at 6:30.
just curious when does everyone go to work? I get calls from people on the east coast then they freak out right when I answer cause they think theyre calling too early and its about 7:30 my time.

7:00 to 4:00 shop and office Monday thru Friday
Of course Eric and I stay late to meet clients, and the guys work late as needed.
Saturdays, only about 4 times a year. The guys worked last Saturday because we were over-booked. :D And may have to work next saturday also.

Shop by 7, leave usually 5:30 or later lately. Usually 4-6 hours over the weekend right now (mainly drawing/programming/answering my mail for the week). We are getting busier but not enough to justify hiring a new programmer.
Shop hours are 7 - 3:30
Office hours are 8 - 4:30
Usually those of uson salary work 10-11 hour days.

You guys
actually get to leave work? I got to work 10 years ago and only left a few days for Expo and Coverings

Stone work is a lifestyle not a job.

Hi Trask
I hear you, except I started over 29 years ago (not including the time I served for my Dad & the USMC

). Seriously, Depends where our jobs are located, and what our clients needs are. It's not uncommon to be up between 4:30 & 5:00 doing computer work, get home between 6 & 10PM, eat, do computer work, pass out (without drinking), wake up and start all over again. I have a Men's group on Sat. at 7am, and manage to get to church by 11am Sunday.

I used to work 15-20 hours a day 6 days a week... it lead to my divorce and isolation from "reality" (friends, family, activities that i enjoyed). All are things that matter most, but are the first thing to be sacrificed for the next sale, the next big job, the next "rush" job.
The divorce FORCED me to be DAD (shared parenting so I have my children (5&9) 50% of the time). The divorce is the best thing that could have happened for my relationship with my children. I would never go back to those hours and LIFESTYLE because i now see what I missed and I REFUSE to miss another moment of their lives, or my life for that matter.
How many of you have told your child, spouse, or friend that you can't do "X" because of work but you make it up to them and never do? How many of you have noticed that you stopped getting asked to be involved in life? It was EVERY day for me. There has to be a balance. Work no longer defines me. I define my work/play and i am ME.
For the "Ironmen" of this website, you have the admiration of people hundreds of miles away, some you have met, most you haven't...what do the people that share your home think? food for thought

when i was at expo i ran ito the guy i worked for for 7 years he asked how i was doing and i said better than i ever have. i learned a lot from that experience. there were months on end i never saw my kids awake many weeks i worked 100+ hour weeks i missed kids plays at school and parent teacher meetings. i did that for years and in the end i got screwed (

to put it simply) the sacrifice was not worth it there is nothing noble about being a slave.

I really dig my family, and I am lazy at heart, believe me. But my shot to provide the best life I can for those I love depends on my business doing well. I am still growing it and we are at a difficult stage in an unforgiving economy. I need to run as much as I can to make sure we don't lose a single account and get as much market share as possible while others are falling. We just hired a new guy this week, he looks like he will work out. If I had the ability to hire 2 guys and pay my bills I would, but those kind of guys are too expensive and I chose machines and owners to make it happen. I need to get it to that point some day, and even then I can't imagine not working 10 hour days. The difference is that If I want to take the kids to the Bahamas from Thursday to Sunday because I feel like it on a Tuesday, Which I can do now, but not without paying the price when I get back. I am working hard now for comfortabilty later, I am willing to risk that it may not pay off at the chance it does. I worked this morning until noon. I also just got through playing with my daughter, so you can do it all, but it is tiring as all hell.
