Re: Soap Stone Question
GOOD to go!
Soapstone is un damaged by heat, it loves it. 1300 DEGREES is the temp it needs before damage can happen. Just make sure there is no seams near the fireplace as the stone will absorb heat and spread it throughout the surface.
I use a 24x24 piece for camping and cook all my meals on it,
bad ass caveman style

Re: Soap Stone Question
Yep you are Golden Bro! I would do it no questions asked. Just as Kevin said also check your local codes for combustibles and for "how far away" the fireplace has to be from the tub. Our local redneck code enforcers make crap up all the time it seems like.

Re: Soap Stone Question
I know I'm always the one saying there is alot of soapstone that is not really soapstone on the market, but I would be carefull in this application. There is also alot of stone that I wouldn't trust in that application. Even in my own shop I am super careful about 3cm soapstone in a firebox. If you know what your dealing with in soapstone, then it's a go, if not I'd consider maybe some soapstone firebrick running into your surround. You can make it look sweet, and the soapstone firebrick will do a better job of heating if you want that . . . Just know your stone, that's all.
Love the cooking on the soapstone . . . I give away peices all the time for that reason. . .love it!

YA for sure!
The best is home made rolled pizza over the campfire! I know it is no roast beast but it is the supreme meal on the stone.

Cooking on soapstone
The pizza sounds reeeeally good.
Gotta track down a piece to start cooking with for sure.
Was looking for recipes and such online but mostly just found pricey soapstone cookware, stoves & slabs:

Cool stuff though.
