Shop Cleanup Program?

Hey All -

I want to implement a new "shop cleanup" program for our guys on Friday afternoons to give us a good reset for the start of the next week.

For an idea on size, we are in a 10k square foot building. We run a BACA Sawjet and the BACA Boss is installing on Monday. I have 16 guys in the shop including saw guys. We run an Ebbco water system so the shop stays relatively clean but I am curious if anyone has a checklist or a program they run in their shops that's better than just an end of day, every day kind of deal. We make the guys keep their tools (pads, grinders, polishers, etc....) but I want something that includes a good washdown once a week of the equipment and shop. Just don't know how to structure and looking for ideas.

Thanks in advance.

just get out there every Friday about 450pm and start drumming up everything you see that you don't like and after a few weeks it will already be done before you walk through  they'll love you for it.

We are a totally wet shop. Still we have the workers wash down the floors in their work areas three times a day. It really helps with the silica dust. Remnants are cut to standard sizes and bar coded by the saw operators. Material handler put the remnants away as they are produced and scans them into inventory. One person empties all of the trash containers once a day. Everything stays clean and orderly.

As part of our silica mitigation program we instituted washdowns at the end and beginning of each day. The morning washdown gets whatever areas weren't washed clean the nite before as evidenced by the chalky residue.

You might also check your lighting. Poorly lit areas like corners or behind machines over time become "ratholes". Good lighting minimizes this.

Checklists are great as long as people use them and there are repercussions for failure to use it or "pencil whipping"

my 2 cents
