Stone Bathroom Vanity with Mysterious White Residue

To be honest, I have no clue what type of material this bathroom vanity is made of. We’re renting. It appears past renters did not properly care for or maintain this vanity. It seems to have developed some sort of residue or white deposit. When it gets wet, it goes away but as soon as it’s dry, the white dull residue is back.

Id love to get rid of it/clean it and then properly care for it. I joined this forum just to ask this question so I have really no experience in stone whatsoever.

I've seen that same etching from "Scrubbing Bubbles Bathroom Cleaner" ..or they used vinegar on it. Like Lester said, it will need refinishing. I ordered an "etch remover polish" for a customer that supposedly doesn't require power tools, but I'm sceptical. It often requires enough time and work to refinish a vanity that a new one is only about a $150 more.

If you're going to continue renting this location, I'd recommend replacing with a granite or quartz top. Seal it yourself if it's granite and call it a day. Marble and renters are not a good combo.

I'd agree that you have some etching going on there. You also have some soap residue. The latter is easy to fix. Etching is a pain, and regardless of your market, replacement will be cheaper than restoration. It's a cool top, but if you're just thinking dollars and cents, replace.

Thanks for all the responses! I’m not going to replace since I don’t think we’ll be here more than a year and a half. I’m going to try the etch polish first and see how that goes. To be honest, the maintenance and supers in this building do not take care of it. They honestly wreck the place worse than the renters. When we moved in, the repaint job was awful- paint stains all over the wood floors, baseboards and light switches. They can barely fix the sinks- always leaking!
