We just got new resin polishing wheels a week ago. Our CNC operator did something to them and now they have lines in them. Is there a way to dress the resin wheels? The last medal wheel is fine and has no grooves but the polishing wheels now do. Do I bring them in and dress them with the stone?
Looking back, fifty years from now, don't you want to say you had the guts to get in the car!!

I don't think you can dress resin polishers. Some lines are to be expected. How bad are they?

Re: lines in polishing wheels
Yes you can!
I won't tell you how though nor will Eric Pate probably. This is because you have to be very soft handed and your skill set on dressing diamonds needs to be extremely well. Not to mention you can easily and I mean easily destroy them if you don't really have the finesse and technique. I dress my fathers T'30's in the flats because they too have to be cleaned up after dressing and calibrating your diamonds. Also remember if you try this you will need to recalibrate a little on the resins.

Re: lines in polishing wheels
There are 3 types of polishers. Just making sure we are talking about the same thing.
1. Resin or solid rubber.......
2. Strip rubber
3. Clay or composite....(BIGI, ADI)
We are talking about number one, not number 3 right????

Re: lines in polishing wheels
The lines are bad enough that you have to touch them up. Tue. night they were perfect. Then Wed. morning, after a few runs, they have lines that I have to fix. Inspecting the polishers, you can see the lines in the resin. The polishers are the rubbers with the clay like coating.

Re: lines in polishing wheels
If you have a tight radius on the top you ran that could be the cause. Some of polish wheels are smaller in diameter than the metals so they will go into a radius a bit more. Like if you have a 4in diameter metal and try to run a 1in radius it will leave a little in the corner then the smaller polish wheel goes in and gets horizontal lines on them.Hope this helps

Re: lines in polishing wheels
What profile is it. You have true "resin" wheels. The layer of resin is very thin and easy to screw up. Not sure how it happened. Maybe they were dialed in a little tight. Are the amps on the machine normal when running them????

Re: lines in polishing wheels
The profile is a T30. The last metal is smooth but once the first polisher goes by, you can start feeling lines in the stone.

Re: lines in polishing wheels
Polishers will develop lines independent of the metals. I know this because for quite awhile, I stopped the machine after the metals and hit it with a 400 to remove all lines and then run the polishers. Even with a steady diet of line free granite the polishers still eventually got lines after a while. Still the best way I have found to put out decent flat edges polishing on the machine.

Re: lines in polishing wheels
I am with randy. Since we discovered the 3 step pads you can run 400 pad, step 2 and 3 while also killing the bottom edge on most stones and be done. Polishing on the machine makes no sense. Only on trouble stones do we have to use the buff. Perfect polish.....Actually faster since we have to kill the bottom on these edges anyway.

Yes, They CAN be dressed. It is a practice I use in extreme emergencies only. I did it at the show I St. Louis. I've done it a many a times on customer tools that need them in order to save them some money and not have to buy new ones when there is still a lot of life left on them.

Re: lines in polishing wheels
Well if your wife says that the statement provided still makes me liable then I removed the information and if one would like to know how to do it in extreme emergencies only, I will accommodate one on one.
