Building boats have you got plans ?

I have always wanted to build a boat. I'm not talking about a ship more like a small 10-12ft tender to take my kids fishing

There are some on other sites but they cost. Im thinking I could digitize them and with my wood CNC walla

So if you have some or know someone who doe and are willing to share then cool I will be happy to share the dxf,s


I think it will be a good thing for me and the kids to do together on the weekends and then we can use it.

My son builds wooden models, the plans are usually fairly detailed blueprints. You could rescale those.

This is about making/ building it with the kids rather than anything else. Hell with the cost of the materails I could by a decent dingy. But for me I want the kids to feel the feeling of spending time to create something and then see it finished and even use it.

I have 3 qualified boat builders that work for me. 1 has a mate that is a top boat designer that has plans with dxfs ready to go. NAH no way that wouldnt be fun.

So about 6 weeks ago I decided to design and make my 1st boat. 10-12ft maybe
Did a whole heap of looking on the web but no help really. So jam it and just do IT.

So spent some time at nights drawing. With 2d. I have not a clue with 3d but I think it will still work. So I scale down to cut a test model.




Frames right but skin off. So shaped bottom. Prolined it the cleaned drawing.



Then after over thinking this whole thing and looking at you tube watching douche bags build Shyte for like 4 weeks I say fark it and just commit to the design. After all it's small and who cares as its a project for me and my kids.

I cut MDF frames



I've tried to make like a kit set. So I spent a fair amount of time on cad.
Then ply frames.





So far excluding wood CNC time Im at about 4 hours.

Maybe you should build a work bench before the boat. You might get epoxy on you bonnet.

Ive got it setup at work in what my bis partner says is the 2nd CNC home. Like fark I'm saying im going back to working with wood and need space to do so.

My guys laugh and it makes me laugh how the boat builders are saying the pitch, fair, stations, chine, gunwale and the rest. I'm like what.....I glue some supports in.

In NZ wood CNC machines only cut and drill. So we will still need to assemble it. Then design the layout of seats and then glass etc. but hey my kids are 4-6 so they will be more my helpers than doing it for them selves.

I think it's good to show them that things can made and not just brought. I think it's good to show kids the principles of building things. Anything!

I still remember building a wooden trolley with my old man, and was like 4-41/2

It looks like a boat but is it seaworthy?
When you take it out first time make sure to leave the kids on shore, wear a life jacket (always), run it hard and then take it home and check it from top to bottom.

Chris it hasn't taken much time as its not big. Also it works well doing it at work as because the glue takes like 24hrs to cure you can only do a little bit at a time. I must admit though that I'm a freaken meat head for 1 thinking the kids would help and 2 starting it just before my crazy season hits.

Ken it's only 12ft long and my pro boat builder that has watched and commented recons that it way way over built. But I hear ya mate and thanks.

I only have 3 weeks till Xmas now so I'm trying but it will be touch and go. But I will do it.............(I hope)

Yeah. The kids always wimp out when its time to do the real work. Leave it to ol' Dad to get it done. But. Thats what we do best.
