Scribing w/ LT55 and Brio

At the moment we are currently using a LT55 for templating and a Brio CNC for all cutting.

When I shoot scribes with multiple points the Brio interprets these lines similar to inside corners, making relief cuts to free the piece. I heard that there is a way to make the scribe a continues line instead of multiple segments. This way the Brio step cuts the curves instead of doing each segment individually.


After the pieces are taken off the table we then have to hand cut the scribes segments. I'm trying to avoid doing this as well as save time cutting, since cutting scribes this way is very time consuming.

Are there any cad experts out there that understand my what I'm trying to say? lol

In cad have you tried PEDIT then joining the segments? I think that's what I remember but I'll have to pull up cad and verify.

Just verified and yes, it's PEDIT. It converts the line into a pline but when selected it's one continues line.

The only CAD based program we have is Laser Products laser template software. I would have to get one. Any suggestions on good free cad programs?

Your Brio should have a CAd/CAM program.

i use the free version of Draftsight.

I just got a used LT55 but have not had a chance to play much with it. Their might be a polyline feature to make that line continuous on the LT software.

Draw 3 point arcs over the lines. The saw will see that as a curve and cut it accordingly

After converting the lines to polylines , try clicking Fit in the Pedit command .

I'm not sure how it works on a brio, but on our saw we can extend and shorten any cut any length. It will stop us however if we are trying to lengthen a cut to the point it will damage a part... We cut scribes on the saw too. We can extend cuts that form a convex shape (like the peak of a mountain) but cannot do so with cuts that form concave shapes (like the bottom of a valley). Our saw will stop the cuts right at each other though with less space than yours so they look connected but we have to cut the blade kerf. We keep a little hand saw at the saw. The only way the concave shapes could be freed by machine is with a jet.

Some segments could be turned into arcs, but not all as you would be creating a best fit arc which would really wither leave a bigger gap at the sheetrock or would be too big and you would have to cut the sheetrock

I usually edit the file in AutoCAD and try to take all the line segments on the walls and turn them into fewer, longer lines that don't have any concaves but still follow the wall well. Some times you have to have a concave shape but then we do the same as Alex, or FB it if I'm being lazy

So I played around with this idea for a couple hours. I downloaded Autcad LT and turned the scribe into a continuous polyline with PEDIT. Unfortunately when importing the dxf into the Brio the line disappears, making a incomplete drawing. I also tried replacing the line segments with arcs. This only helps by reducing the amount of segments for the scribe, so I didn't really succeed with what I was trying to accomplish but I can still reduce cutting time. I do plan on playing around with this a little more.

My brother in law also works in the industry and they run a Brio. This is where I got this idea..he showed me a video of it step cutting a continuous scribe similar to the way it cuts arcs, so I know it can be done. Unfortunately he was not the programmer and they are not willing to share secrets like you fine people.

Surely its quicker to just cut it by hand, rather than wait for the increments of an arc cut?

haha no I haven't called Taf. We've actually been shooting emails back and forth about other things. Bringing up this kind of slipped my mind. I'll have to bother him with it.

In order to cut the scribe by hand I'd have to print out Mylar templates to trace the scribe. This sounds good but that stuff is expensive and I was trying to steer away working with it for every job.

I'll see if my brother in law has that video so I can post it.

I know this is more of an issue with how the Brio is cutting the job, but the Laser Templator software does have a polyline function. You can set it up to automatically polyline all pieces or on a per page basis.
