anybody oscillating a fingerbit?

I have a buddy that just got a brand new CNC from a name brand machine maker. The trainer is long gone, and they are not making parts on the machine yet.

Much of the problem is thier being so swamped it was hard for the right people to set aside time to learn the machine. Thier fault, but still. I am underwhelmed by the CNC company.



The trainer had them oscillating the finger bit. Is anyone else doing this? I am trying to help them integrate the machine into thier shop. And want to make sure I am not behind the times

I was at the start on our machine but no longer. I was finding that once the finger bits get worn down the tips sometimes like to break off. IMO oscillation puts a lot more stress on the tips. Broken tips + oscillation = broken/damaged tops

I was trained to do this and ran it for two years like that. Tried once without occilation, never going back. Cut faster and less amp pull. Don't occilate

When CNC machines became popular in the US about 2003 or so; there were not many Fingerbits available on the market so the choices of lengths was limited and many we only available 50 or 60 mm so fabricators felt they were waisting precious diamonds - thus $$$ so many resided to the fact that oscillating was the way to go. As it turns out - they either didn't work that well or they broke. The key is to get the correct length plus + 10mm for slab thickness variance and ease of setting Z axis. When choosing a fingerbit, use one that works best for Your machine; in my experience, just because one worked great on your friend's Intermac, doesn't necessarily mean it will work the same on your North-wood etc, but it may!! Once you figure out which one works best for you II recommend you stay with it.

BTW - Oscillating any fingerbit with Patterned Diamond tool works completely against it's physics.

A tip to save some money. If you run a lot of single edge 2cm projects buy 4cm finger bits, the bits I use have about 48mm of diamond. Run the finger bit on the bottom half until its worn then run the top half. Twice the life out of one finger bit!
