This is the OMAG Tower 6.

OMAG has been working on this for the last 3,4,5 years maybe. I am not sure exactly how big it is, but I think it is HUGE(like doesn't fit in small buildings). Some raw pics from OMAG on a test carving. The concept of the machine is definitely different, and I am pretty sure that this is NOT like "flying bridge" machines we have seen before as one of the reasons for the machine is to better the play and slack in robots when carving.














I don't know why I try to keep my saw clean.......Apparently a little dust and sludge is no biggie.......

Yeah, I want to learn more about this out of curiosity. The design is weird to me and I would like to know the science behind it. All I really know is that they have been working on it for a while and are very excited about it so it definitely has attributes in statue machining that are advantageous. It is available in 6-12 interpolated axes, I think the 12 is when there is another tower on the other side of the table, and they simultaneously carve the statue from both sides AND the table rotates while both sides are machining. Yeah, that is pretty sick...... Not that any of this has anything to do with us countertop guys, but it is definitely pretty cool stuff regarding stone.

All I really learned from this is that I am overly concerned about my saw getting dirty around rotating joints and I forget how they make these things AND how they treat them in Italy ... ....I still will keep my saw clean though

The older machines were literally tracing machines from a model spinning on a lathe. The finished product could be scaled for the original maquette. This seems to replace the original maquette with a a 3-D file.

Its a two year old project and it is headed towards being a possible 13 axes machine. Two of these 6 axes towers and a rotary table in between is how you get to 13 axes. The design is very similar to a lot of metal working CNC's. Very rigid, very fast and capable of holding a 54 hp. spindle to get serious with. Official specs have yet to be released.

Sorry it occurred to me that some info is missing here. The statue is 2 meters tall. What is so interesting about such a machine is that it can do really big work, work that in the past needed a very tall machine that often was too tall for most buildings. Now you can do much bigger work in a much smaller building.

A robot carving a life sized horse at Henraux, in Cararra Italy. Not sure of the brand.
The plexiglass safety barrier is 9' +/- tall. Sorry the pics are not great, had to shoot through the safety doors.

Saw a 5 axis OMAG with a huge z stroke @ Henraux. The bed was about 3' below the floor elevation.

Aside from keeping the water and debris contained inside of the safety doors in front of the horse they are there to assure that no one is is the work area itself. I have no understanding as to why but the tool applications themselves are not confined to a designated area but seemingly at any second it will change to cutting in a completely different position. It will move to that position wickedly fast and one of us mere humans would not have time to get out of the way. I understand the moving fast part but I have no idea of why the cutting jumps around so much. If anybody out there knows why I would love to hear the reason.
The robots are coming fast and there is a lot of bad information out there right now about what they can currently do but it is just a matter of time. I think most people don't realize just how much robots are about to change our futures and our lives. Robots are expected to take over jobs that most people never dreamed of like bookkeeping and accounting. Those are applications that are not generally thought of as us humans losing to robots, most people just think of them as taking over a lot of labor type jobs but the spectrum is much bigger than that. I have been advising young people to consider Robots as a good field for their future. That is until the robots are doing the designing, maintaining and the building of the robots...

The name Robot Killer was an in-house nickname that we used inside of the factory and was not really ever thought of as a name that would ever reach the public. I think the name 'Robot Killer' was just too much for Mr. Nick to resist sharing...

The original pic reminds me of the OMAG statue machines from the 80's, only these machines were more like lathes in a horizontal orientation. I believe Kotecki in Cleveland had one (or two).
