We have a very large wrench to tighten the mill bits onto the cones so this doesn't happen. We also stopped greasing the threads on the mills bits too. Had too many come loose on us over the years.

Yep tighting them good, you will hear the noise change when they loosen up.

I was under the impression that the design of the spindle rotation, and threading on the cones, was suppose to prevent your finger bits from loosening like that... Unless of course your going to slow, getting glazed and not cutting, aka what clhilde did...?

Yep totally spun the threads off and striped out the cone

You didn't need that cone anyway, it was old and useless .

Yup, a little wobble in that bit from being loose will strip that cone for sure..... How slow were you actually going?

about 150 and these bits run smoothest at about 400 - 500 but it was a small piece and i didn't want it to move
