Dimut tooling on Northwood router
Just wondering if anyone was running Dimut closed CNC tooling on a Norhwood router, I am about to purchase some tooling and was trying to decide between Diamut and Nicoli.

Re: Dimut tooling on Northwood router
I have a Diamut G33 profile that I am happy with. I decided against closed profiles because in our area it seems a lot of the stone we get is less then 3cm. Do a search for closed profiles and you'll find some who use them although they might not be the brands you listed.

Would most of you prefer closed tooling?

Re: Dimut tooling on Northwood router
We run diamut high speed tooling from granite city. They seem to have exclusive rights to the high speed tools. We are extremely happy with them, we ran ADI uhs tools previous to these. Also Josh that will come out and assist you with setup is great and it's well worth having him help even if your comfortable with setup.
We are 90% closed profile and love it. It takes more time on the machine because of the calibration wheel but saves you polishing time. We also run the cal wheel around sinks.

Re: Dimut tooling on Northwood router
Very few customers of mine run closed profile tooling. However, the ones that do SWEAR by them. Yes, many stones come in under 3cm, but if 50% does come in 3cm+ than there is 50% of the jobs you do not have to touch (assuming the tools are set right and maintained).
I was a manual shop and we use to have to tune in the thickness during punch out so you did not have the "step" at the joint. Because of what we did, I do not understand why every shop would not automatically calibrate whether using closed profiles or not. But, that's just how we did things.

Re: Dimut tooling on Northwood router
I run closed. But i dont know that I will replace them with closed as we prob only get about10-15% 3cm stone.
But it sure is nice when they come of the machine ready to install

Re: Dimut tooling on Northwood router
this may be a stupid question, but could you set up a machine with closed profile tooling to make 2 passes on thinner stones? do the first pass as normal for the profile, and the second pass for the bottom edge? the second pass should be super fast since you are mostly just easing the bottom edge right? seems like it would also help to eliminate lines on the flat portions of your profile, and maybe help to keep your tools shape? ( seems like if you only run a single pass, and the bottom edge is not touching, then you will not wear that part evenly)
maybe I think too much

Re: Dimut tooling on Northwood router
Wouldn't that apple core the bit by using the same area twice (in te middle) and only once on the top/bottom?

Re: Dimut tooling on Northwood router
No it wouldn't touch the second time, only the polisher would.

Re: Dimut tooling on Northwood router
Wouldn't the middle wear out faster? A 3cm bit will have an overlapping area on a 2 cm stone (if run top/bottom cycles).

Re: Dimut tooling on Northwood router
I'm not good at explaining this but I'll try. When the metal bits have run once no more stone will be removed no matter how many times you run it again unless you change the offsets. In this case he is changing the z not the x-y so it will not apple core the flat part.

Re: Dimut tooling on Northwood router
I understand. For some reason I was thinking it would constantly be putting pressure on the side of the tool. Not true, since the material has been removed from the tool's path.
thanks for your patience in explaining this to me.

Re: Dimut tooling on Northwood router
This was a feature I really liked on the intermac with the High Bed. I ran my pieces towards the front of the bed and could reach in and ease 90% of the edges that didn't get eased by hand while the polishing tools were running. Then I would finish easing the remaining 10% after the cycle finished while tops were still upside down on the cups. Kept a polisher at the machine just for this task. Easy peasy.

Re: Dimut tooling on Northwood router
David, we do the same thing if the cal wheel doesn't touch the material it only takes a min.

Re: Dimut tooling on Northwood router
I used to work in a shop that did exactly this. We measured each piece to find thinnest section and then we had our calibrator height tied in with last 2 diamonds and polish (CARE: you've got to fudge the measure for this to work and I take NO responsibility for how badly you fudge a measure). Each diamond and polish did a "low" and a "high" pass so once dialled in it meant you could run from 26mm stone to 34mm and still have it come off machine fully polished and calibrated. Only downfall was not selecting the "alternative calibrtor" when you needed it for pocketing or drainers
