UV PROTECTION
HELLO ALL, I HAD A CUSTOMER BRING US SAMPLES OFF A LEATHERED GRANITE WITH A SHINEY COATING ON IT. OUR COMPETATOR IS SELLING IT AS AN OUT DOOR KITCHEN UV PROTECTION. ANY THOUGHTS ON WHAT IT MIGHT BE?

Re: UV PROTECTION
Polish?
We offer a few different polished leathered options. Crazy how shiny it gets. Black pearl looks like plastic it is so reflective .
A pic would be helpful.

Re: UV PROTECTION
There isn't much out there like this, it would most likely have to be a urethane coating. Polyurethane, or just about any other type of coating isn't going to be UV stable in terms of color and clarity. Epoxies are stable structurally, but most will yellow or fade over time when exposed to direct UV.

Re: UV PROTECTION
I was visiting one of the local suppliers the other day and they had some Leathered Ubatuba that had a glossy finish on it. You could see on the edges that some type of coating had been applied after it was finished. They weren't sure what it was or why it was there. I didn't care for the way it looked.

Re: UV PROTECTION
Topical treatments are scary, as I know of none that actually perform to an acceptable level, let alone the full glory of the wagging sales tongue.
Technically, leathering will remove most of the resin (if not all of it). That is all that is required for a long useful outdoor life span of natural stone. We have been putting natural stone outdoors for 123 years, with no issue.

Re: UV PROTECTION
Dan is right (edited response)
MSI has Desert Dream in a leather finish and the shine that came from it actually made the client think we swapped slabs on them when installing it. The company went as far as replacing it for the client to make them happy.
below is a picture of polish to leather by hand that I did in my old shop. I only went to 220 since was our conference table. Roped edge included

Think Rome and been using natural stone outside for centuries.

Seriously, Polished leathered stone can look fake, kind of crazy.

Re: UV PROTECTION
My most favorite finishes is flamed and no shine leathered. I cannot walk by a stone without touching it and the combination of soft texture and nature's awesome visual beauty is is like nothing else. I also think Luna pearl is perfect when textured but looks like crap shiny.
