Enlighten me on backsplash machines.
The dinosaur we've been running is down more than its up.
Whats are the range of prices?
Are there brands that are better than others?
Which models have a bevel to remove the saw chips? Which models don't have this feature.
We're a weird mix of digital templating, sawjet cutting, and manual polishing. The new construction jobs always have 4" backsplash, and that's our bottleneck right now. Average week is 60 countertops, solid week is 75 tops, crazy week is 90 tops.

Re: Backsplash machine
We run a Sasso Flying Flat for last 9 years. chamfer wheels, 5 polishing heads.
Many have bought the Tower (GMM) with success.
I think Sasso has a more advanced Flying Flat version now.
new 50kk+/-
used 15-25 k

Re: Backsplash machine
We have a GMM Tower 73 we have been running for more than 3 years now. As long as no one messes with the settings on the heads it runs really well!
The 7 in the name means it has 7 polishing heads which oscillate. The 3 means that it has 3 beveling heads. 2 heads for the front bevel so you can run one fixed height head with a cup wheel or similar to cut the bevel and a second high grit to polish the bevel. There is a single back beveler to cut and high hone a bevel. I think we run a 600 grit brick on this head.

Re: Backsplash machine
Just fyi- We interchange all 3 of those materials daily on the flat with no issues. We run granite and marble at 50 and quartz at 50-85Alex DiPietro wrote:We have a new Marmo 711VO. Honestly I think I may have made a mistake with this machine. While it is great when its working correctly, it seems to constantly have issues as we move from quartz to granite to marble. We seem to be having the most problems with quartz. Sometimes 1/4" Of the sawn edge doesnt' get polished, despite having perfectly square cuts. Also, the ends of pieces often need to be touched up.

Re: Backsplash machine
I have a Park Fastback. Had it about 5 years. One spindle failure in 5 years. Polishes great, as good as the ProEdge did on flat edges. Not the cheapest machine you can get but very trouble free.

Hi Tom,
I will be traveling until next Tuesday, but if you can wait until then I will be happy to send you complete information on the GMM Tower series. You can also go to YouTube at GMM Tower. There are a number of videos.

Re: Backsplash machine
If you have the space...The FLAT 62 is my favorite flat machine. You can run splash thru it all day long....and it really is engineered for running tops....you can order it with 6,8 or 10 polishing heads and up to four bevelers. The motors stay out of the water flow, the tools are easy to change, it has a programable touch screen they now ship it with 1.5 meter feed tables.

Or you can use a back splash machine to run giant tops.....it works.

We just had marmo 711 installed last WednesdayAlex DiPietro wrote:We have a new Marmo 711VO. Honestly I think I may have made a mistake with this machine. Since then we did over 2000lnft of edge on quartz no problems
When they installed the machine we had the same feeling thatvit was leaving marks on in and out
The trick is simple run only 120grit to 1800 and bevelers, and turn off 60 and lux

Re: Backsplash machine
Do any of those machines do radiused edges? We need to upgrade from our pro edge II, it was a workhorse but it's about worked to death, and we do a lot of bullnose and 3/8" edges. Thanks.

Re: Backsplash machine
Hi Mitch,
To the best of my knowledge the answer is no. For example the GMM Tower can mill a radial edge, but it cannot polish one. The mechanism to produce polished radial edges is substantially larger and more complex than what is found on a back splash machine. Different manufacturers use different systems, naturally ours is best, but everyone is faced with the same basic problems.

Re: Backsplash machine
I think sasso has a horizontal machine that can radius ease edges and do splash.

Re: Backsplash machine
Any inline machine that can do radius work, can also polish flat edges.
Be sure to ask for the minimum size that the machine will allow and still function.
I know Comandulli, Montressor, GMM & Sasso all have such beasts to spit out finished work as fast as you can load the machine.
We have an older model Bellani Comet (now strategically partnered with Breton) . We love our machine!

Re: Backsplash machine
Dan is correct. All of the firms that he mentioned plus a few others make horizontal machines that can do back splashes. However they are much larger than dedicated back splash/sill machines and cost $60,000-80,000 more.

Re: Backsplash machine
pay more, get more.
for radius edges, they can not be beat. Great production rate, superior finish and very economical per foot of edge

Re: Backsplash machine
I am not sure if you have seen yet, but Montresor has constructed their new Vela backsplash machine that is now available in the U.S. I believe that there is a picture posted on the Montresor sponsor page. Salem Stone has one up and running in our new showroom, cranking out some nicely polished pieces, as well as another here ready to go. You can see more about specifications by following this link - https://www.salemdist.com/stone/showroo ... -polishers . Feel free to contact us with questions or if you need any further information.

I'll post an update on this. Once we switched from glossfire pads to the pads marmo recommended our issues disappeared. Our marmo 711 is awesome!
