honing quartz
I am a designer working with a client in Manhattan Beach, CA. We've selected a quartz that is from a small brand, sourced from a stoneyard in the LA area. We would like to find fabricator in this area who will be able to hone or even dull the high polish of this quartz, realizing that the warrantee will be voided.
Are there any fabricators who have the equipment to be able to do this?
THANK YOU!

Re: honing quartz
I would not do it.
The surface of the product is 7% or more, dependent on manufacturer and color, epoxy resin and colorant.
It will not give you a consistent finish and it will not be a care free surface.
I would source a Ceasarstone -- or other manufacturer's --color that is already available honed or with a "concrete finish".

Re: honing quartz
We hone and leather it. The leather is kind of a rough hone.

Re: honing quartz
We have a bed polisher for this purpose.
Honing quartz is far trickier than honing natural stone. i would suggest finding one that is already honed, if at all possible.

Re: honing quartz
I've leathered Quartz or ES before. Its really soft so it leathered easily.
Honing it? I would use a honing powder to make sure you aren't going to see swirls.
You can use the mapping feature above in the tabs to find a fabricator in your area!

I second what Dave said. There is a reason that Caesarstone, Cosentino, and the rest are discontinuing having honed material. It stains very easily.Dave.Scott wrote:I would not do it.

I get the impression that asthetics are the only factor on this one.

The Tenax Quartz Shield and Quartz Toner were developed to help with the staining issues on quartz surfaces. The Quartz Toner is a premium grade quartz sealer and color enhancer while the Quartz Shield is a premium sealer for Quartz. These are excellent products to help with the staining issues created by the honing/leathering of quartz! We have even had the Quartz manufacturers contacting us about these products!

I don't think I could explain to my customers why they need this follixin stuff to seal their quartz. Seems contradictory to all the information that is in the marketing information.

Re: honing quartz
Matt- I totally understand! The marketing of quartz surfaces is one of its major issues in my opinion. They make it sound indestructible to the end user but as we all know it is not. Therefore are you helping your customer by NOT telling them of the potential issues? Do you seal your natural stone countertops for your customers? This really is no different, EXCEPT that the quartz companies aren't admitting that there is an increased risk of staining with these honed and brushed surfaces. It is all about educating your customers up front and letting them make an educated decision on the type of surface they want in their house. All these products are for is to help make the existing quartz surfaces better for the end user.

Re: honing quartz
We've honed and leathered multiple jobs of engineered stone. Haven't had any issues, or call backs. We have recently started to hit them with the quartz enhancer product offered by tenax. Oldest one we've done was probably 6 years ago and like I said, no call backs.
