I've an intermac 30 with icam 3d software.
I'm trying to engrave different types of font onto granite and quartz.
I'm trying to find the best way using a conical bit with a 30 degree angle.
I've tried roughing cleaning and and 3d text but can't get it right

Following this. Setting up engraving tools is my next project when we get some downtime in the shop.

Re: Intermac 30 icam
Alright I had a crack at setting ours up. I set up a 6mm flat top diamond tip mill to engrave text to a depth of 0.5mm.
Firstly I tried to use the 3d text feature on ICam, however it came back with an error saying that operation is not allowed on this machine.
Next I programmed the text to be pocketed out rather than 3d text processed in the machining options.
This worked; to an extent. I programmed the text to be 100mm tall, however it's come out 106.4mm, it's also leaving a little bit too much material inside the letters, there are a few peaks and troughs where its cut a radius and the step its taken while pocketing has been just a touch too far.
My machine threw a hissy-fit halfway through the operation though, and its just about knock-off time, so I didn't get a chance to fine tune today.
Hope that helps, I'll keep you posted if I do get a chance to fine tune it and get it 100% correct

Re: Intermac 30 icam
I've tried several times pocketing seems to work best but as you say Ben sometimes it leaves a thin line where it hasn't touched between passes. I can get 3d text going but on a 10mm diameter with 60 degrees angle I have to go 8mm deep to get it does. I had better success doing the text in Corel draw x6 them importing the xxx. Then exploding the text and rejoining seems to run better. Also by doing spiral out then zig zag I think it is. I've seen videos of cncs doing like joint writing where the tool moves up and down to get the desired thickness you do have varied depths but the text is engraved perfect.

Re: Intermac 30 icam
I ended up pocketing the letters with a step distance of 1.5mm to make sure I got every bit, but also then running a mill grooving program on the letters outline. That gets the outline of the letters machined, and the interior section fully pocketed. It's an imperfect method, since it will mill the tools radius outside the outline, but that's the what I've got for now. This shouldnt be as much of an issue for you with the 60 degree tool, since your radius on the cutting edge at 0.5mm would be like what, 1mm?beefyor1983 wrote: ↑Thu Apr 13, 2017 4:19 pmI've tried several times pocketing seems to work best but as you say Ben sometimes it leaves a thin line where it hasn't touched between passes. I also found, at least on ICAM 3D, it wont always program every letter of every font. I have to test program every font to see if it will draw up the machine path or not. I had to turn my machines rapid down to 12.5% as well in order to stop it triggering its bump stops every time it moved onto the next letter lol.
Anyways, now my next major issue is that the machine seems to be adding random curves and circles to the program, and I suspect it's some sort of machine optimisation setting, where its just moving the mill to the next machine path without z-stepping off the surface, so I'll be playing around with that today since we just got an engraving job late last week.

Re: Intermac 30 icam
For letters going outside are you selecting the word as TEXT or closed polylines if it's text explode it and try re grouping.
I've gone of the 60 degree bit using flat.
The reason I find it dosnt pocket the machine path is if the bit diameter is greater than the area it needs to fit into.
I tend to mill groove the outside line rather than contour but if say ts same difference.
Yes my first 60 degree bit broke too deep lol.

Changing the letters to polylines is utterly brilliant! I'll try that when this machine cycle ends. Top idea.beefyor1983 wrote: ↑Tue Apr 18, 2017 3:56 pmFor letters going outside are you selecting the word as TEXT or closed polylines if it's text explode it and try re grouping.

I'm mainly not using our 60 degree bit because the only fonts I can find are like full bodied fonts, i guess you could say, rather than stick fonts, if that makes sense?
That makes sense for it not to pocket things smaller than the tools diameter, but it wasn't doing the machine paths for letters in size 100, with pocket sections much larger than my 5.8mm tool tip. I think exploding the text and running it as polylines would totally resolve that though. Again, that is a brilliant solution haha
