how to motivate employees

I have a question. I am new to SFA so forgive me if this is out of bounds. How does everyone pay their fab and install guys? I pay by the hour. More and more mistakes are being made lately. I find myself paying more overtime with more mistakes. I need to find an acceptable way to motivate my guys to do better work. I cant make them repair the mistakes for free, nor do they seem to care if they make mistakes, because they get overtime if they do. I have heard of paying by the foot. I have also heard about paying by the job. Does anyone on here pay other than by the hour and can you explain the formula to make the change?

Hi, welcome to the SFA!
Please fill in your signature by clicking the link in mine. We like to know who we are talking to.
Unfortunately, this is a members lounge topic. We do not talk pricing/money/etc in the general forum because all eyes can see it. The dues for paying members are $100/year. You can join by clicking the "Join the SFA" tab at the top of the page. That will get you in the members lounge where you will find tons of information on this topic.

+1 on membership. A recent thread dealt with exactly this issue. Hint - more pay won't fix the problem.

Re: how to motivate employees
Another hint, switching to SF or job payment won't fix the underlying problem either. +2 for membership. Having members on speed dial and access to the members lounge is worth far more than the $100 membership fee.

Re: how to motivate employees
Definitely a members lounge question for deep discussion. I once sat in on a trade show session. The speaker had a set percentage of profit for quarterly bonuses to be paid out to all employees ( the percentage of how much to each individual dealt with what they did). He would keep a running tab on a white board in the shop so all could see what the "nut" was. However, mistakes hit the profit and that reflected in their bonuses. He found that when he did this, the self policing in his shop drastically improved and so did efficiency. Think about it, if Jimmy is constantly messing up or dragging ass, Billy Bob is gonna step in and get Jimmy straight because if he does not, his bonus is effected. Best bonus plan I have ever heard about.
