Hello everyone,
Can anyone tell me what the tolerance is for a flush mount cooktop? I have a customer who is not happy with the 1/8" gap on all 4 sides of her cooktop, my first thought is that we can use silicone to fill the gap. Its obviously very tricky to get a prefect fit but perhaps the gap should have been closer to a 1/16"?
Would it be acceptable to use the 1/8" gap and use silicone to cover?
Thanks

Re: Flush mount cooktop gap
Manufacturer should have cutout specs with suggested spacing.
I just looked at Miele for an example, and the model I looked at (KM 6375) shows 1/8" overall (1/16" all around) larger than the cooktop surface.

Thanks Mark, I did the same. They say there is supposed to be a 1/16" gap with some variance. The gap we have is closer to an 1/8". A little big but I have to explain to the client it is normal I suppose.

I leave 1/16" all the way around, no more than that.

Re: Flush mount cooktop gap
We ran into this a while back, the display had 0 gap but we followed the manufacturer's guidelines and left an 1/8 to be siliconed as per instructions. Custy was not happy and the appliance rep called to see if we could do the silicone...

2mm gap all around. Always talk people out of it. If they are adamant we show them this picture and get them to sign an acknowledgment that there will be a 2mm gap on all sides.

Re: Flush mount cooktop gap
2mm = ~0.0787" = ~1/16" strong
(I had to look it up as I could not remember my mm-math)
Rick.
P.S. Wow that was off before! Thanks Lester!

Don’t offset .787
That would be a big gap

Re: Flush mount cooktop gap
Is there a bit that would work for a basic wood router to dado that out.. I have to flush mount a piece of glass 1/4 by 1/4 and looking for suggestions on the best way to do this. I have never done this before? I do not have a cnc machine so it would be done manually...I have considered cutting with a grinder blade but not sure how to get the corner squared up?

Re: Flush mount cooktop gap
I squared the corners of the last one we did with a dremel with a little diamond blade on it. A wood router? is it soapstone? if it is then yes, use a carbide bit and a router. use a straight edge as a guide. if its granite or similar then you could use an alpha hand saw for the majority of it to cut the shape, a grinder to remove whatever is left inside that, and finish the corners with a dremel.

Re: Flush mount cooktop gap
you can cut the corners completely out with a blade. theres really no need to dremel. They will be covered

Re: Flush mount cooktop gap
Use a saw blade for the straight sides and set up a guide fence.
I've used a 1" diameter vacuum brazed drum wheel on a base-mounted grinder (Galeski, but any one with depth setting would work). This works great on the corners.
Make sure the drum has diamonds on the nose/end of the bit. I think I got them from Helix years ago.
