Anyone see this show? How the Egyptians extracted granite for their monuments. Pounding rocks into the granite.
¼” in a 12 hour day! How’s that for speed rates / production.
I have always been amazed by the work they did with the technology / tools they had available.
Check it out this link.

Dind't have a choice back then, you were what they said you were, or you got the whip
Pound rock or die, and you didn't get a beer at the end of the day
Its amasing to see what they did,but the real fun would have been having to under-cut that big ass piece of rock, I'm sure at least half of them would have been squashed in the process.

actually they did get beer, I believe thats one of the originations of beer. It took too much time to stop and eat bread AND drink water, so they invented liquid bread. pound your lunch and get your ass back to work! saw this on a documentary

Cool stuff. I once saw pictures of people polishing stone with leather straps. That is a lot of patience.

sculptors still do it. its mainly for alabaster but you can do it on marble also. alot of patience is an understatement.
I have done a lot of reading on the egyptians and stone work. they used to grind floors 3,000 years ago. they would take crushed sandstone or limestone and cover the floor. then they took a block of stone and put it on top. they would attach ropes and drag it back and forth and the sand would finish the floor, crazy.
there was also evidence, crystal clear eveidence, that they cut perfect slabs back then. they found several large blocks that had half-slabs cut into them, perfectly space, straight, flat etc.

Re: Ancient Egyptian Stone Workers
A few years a go I was in Egypt for 6 days. It was incredible, the ultimte for a stone guy. I saw Giza (3 pyramis & Sphinx), Valley of the Kings, Temple of Karnack ( 8x larger than Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris). The coolest thing was going down into King Tut"s burial chamber. The amount of stone work is mind boggling, from the scale to the detail. I saw columns (100's) that were 8' diameter, 80' tall in a perfect grid (Temple of Karnack). At one time the Temple was the largest buidling in the world.
FYI: the workers who built these things were paid workers, not slaves.

On a smaller scale, check out the arena in Verona if you go to the stone show. Amazing large blocks etc.

It has been proven that the workers that built these works of art were not slaves.

Re: Ancient Egyptian Stone Workers
i was going to comment on them not being slaves they were treated well. and there structures go way beyond just the structural work. if I'm not mistaken the 3 pyramids are constructed exactly to scale and the shape of Orions belt.

Re: Ancient Egyptian Stone Workers
there are works of stone all over the world that are amazing.
my list
#1 Machu Picchu http://www.10000stepsnorthland.co.nz/de ... geID=18556
WHY #1 many reasons, environment this city was built at an altitude that would be a nightmare even today. the stone was qauried at the base of the mountain and moved to the top. this city has a running water system for all the homes that still runs flawlessly today. it has resiviour that run through the homes at such an exact angle that the water runs at a steady 3 gallons per minute the drain fields are some of the most advanced in the world and revel any thing being built today. this city in my opinion is way more advanced than the Egyptians and Rome
#2 Egypt for all the reasons listed above.
#3 the pyramid of the moon and the other Mexican pyramids http://www.richard-seaman.com/Travel/Me ... index.html
-the rest of the list are all well known cathedrals the coliseum as well at the apprentice pillar Roslyn chapel(AMAZING!!)
there is also stone henge and Easter island and the modern day work of stone amazement the crazy horse memorial.
