Chiselled Soaptone
A customer has asked me to do a 6cm Chiselled Soapstone job, is this possible?

Re: Chiselled Soaptone
I did a 6 cm chiseled limestone job, and it would not chisel with our beaver, but it was possible !! just had to chisel it by hand.Anything is possible with the proper tools, either new or old. Whatever works to get the job done. :D

Re: Chiselled Soaptone
My guess is that that soapstone will not shear as rough as granite, and to use hand chisels, s/b and other methods to accomplish, as Joe suggested. Check out Trow & Holden for hand chisels, I would suggest a 9 point , a hand set, a ripper and a flat chisel, along with one of their Dallet air hammers.

Re: Chiselled Soaptone
I think the real question should be “can you chisel soapstone”?
Although we have not tried soapstone, softer materials usually have a tendency to crush rather than “snap” like most granite or some marbles.

Re: Chiselled Soaptone
We've done a number of 3cm soapstone jobs with no issues..it does break a bit different..more of a "dent & pop" but for the most part it has been very predictable to chisel. I assume 6cm would work with the big Beaver..Never wanted to try

Re: Chiselled Soaptone
I just did my first 6 cm chiseled edge and had alot of fun doing it. It was just a small sill for a friend but you'll get the idea. I did it by hand and found when I chiseled it from the top it did not go all the way through. I flipped it and did it from the bottom and turned out sweet. I took some of my brushes to clean everything up. I also brushed the top. I didn't think it was hard. It turned out like this. . .

Re: Chiselled Soaptone
Joshua,
That looks great. When we pitch out memorials we always pitch from top and bottom to get that nice "mountain range look" running through the center of the pitching. The idea is to take off enough o leave some decent relief from each direction, then you actually have to pitch less stone off to get a nice look.
Your job looks as if you have been pitching stone for 30 years, very nice.

Nice work Josh,
We like hand pitching as well. Looks better IMO, less machined.

Re: Chiselled Soaptone
The chiseled edge looks great! I am attaching a picture of a 6cm Chiseled edge Soapstone island. We have found that even within Soapstone, different varieties chisel differently. Some varieties lend themselves more to chiseling than others, so we always do a small sample first just to see how it will look.[img]

Re: Chiselled Soaptone
We did a job with the 6cm Jaws and it came out sweet. Not sure if my guys pre-scored it or not (I was away when the jobwas fabbed). The soapstone we used did not have much of the deep veining though. We also had no issues with 6cm Jerusalem Limestone.

Re: Chiselled Soaptone
I just did a 3cm chisled soapstone job 2 days ago with the Pit Bull from Gran Quartz. It was a piece of cake. I just took my time with the foot pedal as not to crack too hard too fast. It went thru it like a hot knife thru butter with no issues. That Pit Bull is the bomb!
